Gault&Millau's review 2026

A true castle tale of flavours awaits at 1444, the signature restaurant of Mokrice Castle. Its name pays homage to the year 1444, when the castle was first mentioned in written records. Dining in such a magical setting is already an experience in itself, while the restaurant’s themed evenings reveal an even more creative side of the kitchen. One of the most memorable specialties is the castle-style nigiri sushi made from locally sourced red trout. The best way to discover the restaurant’s culinary philosophy is through its seasonal tasting menu, although guests can also order individual dishes. The experience often begins with house pâtés served alongside warm bread. A delicate homemade chicken pâté with mustard seeds and a salmon spread enriched with fish roe pair beautifully with a glass of local sparkling wine, setting the tone for the meal. Another highlight is the ravioli filled with cheese and smoked trout, served in a delicate butter sauce with young spinach. Equally difficult to resist is the house recommendation: a masterfully prepared cowboy steak, coated in a crisp crust while remaining wonderfully juicy and tender at its core. A fresh potato salad provides the perfect counterpoint. For a sweet castle finale, guests can choose between an elegant crème brûlée and a timeless chocolate indulgence - a decadent soufflé served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
