Gault&Millau's review 2026

Pri Žabarju does not rely on grand promises. Here, Ljubljana still smells of home cooking, and the food remains true to what guests expect from a traditional inn: honest dishes, a warm welcome, and the feeling that culinary tradition is still very much alive. The menu is built around classics that proudly embrace their roots. It follows the seasons and Slovenian culinary heritage while occasionally adding a subtle contemporary touch. A good example is the butternut squash risotto - creamy, rich, and full of flavour without unnecessary complexity. Among the cold starters, beef tongue stands out, while frog legs and Carniolan sausage are notable choices among the warm appetizers. The menu also includes hearty stews and soups, from veal stew to tripe and goulash, as well as dishes from the wood-fired oven and traditional inn favourites such as blood sausage, pečenica, and liver. A specialty of the house is frog legs, prepared either Wiener-style or grilled with garlic and parsley, Trieste style. This is one of the details that gives Pri Žabarju its distinctive identity. Homemade pasta is also available, while dessert naturally reflects the restaurant’s pastry-making tradition. House-made ice cream and a selection of cakes provide a satisfying finish to the meal. During our visit, the chestnut cake was particularly memorable.
