Gault&Millau's review 2026

In a narrow street of historic Šmartno, where tables occupy the stone and shade of old houses in the warmer months, the perfect backdrop for a culinary escape is created. The beautifully restored House Marica welcomes guests with homeliness and hospitality from Brda. Steak tartare turns into a fun ritual and leaves the guest with the role of the head chef: on a rustic wooden board there are top-quality meat and separate ingredients that allow you to season it completely to your own taste. When tradition meets the patience of Brda nons, dishes are created that speak through taste and memory. In Hiša Marica, this philosophy is embodied by fregola with veal ragout, which combines tender veal, garden vegetables and long hours of slow cooking, and Brda hail with homemade sausage and roasted polenta. As if created for moments when one wants something homemade, but prepared with feeling and respect for taste. Beef tagliata black angus is a tribute to good meat: meticulously cooked, juicy, and full of flavor. It is refined by leaves of aged Parmesan cheese, nostalgia is evoked by roasted potatoes according to the recipe of Nona Marica. With a glass of selected Brda wine from the family cellar, the story concludes without big words – with taste, warmth and that feeling of being at a table where tradition still lives.
