Gault&Millau's review 2026

Pekel Inn near Borovnica has a name that immediately sparks imagination. Yet anyone expecting a dark, infernal setting will find something entirely different at the end of the road, just before the entrance to the Pekel Gorge: forest, a stream, the coolness of the gorge and a welcoming inn. In the warmer months, the garden terrace comes into its own, where food seems to take on a different character amid the sounds of nature. The house speciality is trout - fresh and prepared in several variations, with the kind of unmistakable simplicity that good fish requires and that needs no elaborate tricks. It is enough for a fried trout coated in cornmeal to arrive at the table: crispy, fragrant and reassuringly homely, instantly explaining why Pekel enjoys such a loyal following. The kitchen avoids unnecessary embellishment. Instead, it serves hearty soups, prepares porcini mushrooms and other seasonal delicacies, grills steaks, handles game with confidence and offers homemade desserts. Its reputation is built on the traditions of a classic excursion inn, with dishes capable of satisfying hikers, families gathered around the table or guests who have travelled here specifically because of its good name. A distinctive touch is added by the selection of Chilean wines. Even the very idea of a wine story connected with the devil seems almost too fitting beside an inn called Pekel (Hell) to be a coincidence.
