Gault&Millau's review 2026

At Zgornji Kirn, a home-cooked meal still means something. They do not chase culinary fads or hide behind complicated descriptions. Hospitality here is not a learned mannerism but something reflected in the soup, the roast, the aspic – and in the feeling that a place like this cannot be created overnight. The grilled porcini mushrooms, juicy and full of flavour, never fail to impress; you would be hard-pressed to find better elsewhere. Homemade aspic with egg recalls a time when cooking was never rushed, but patiently awaited until simple ingredients were transformed into something delicious. The beef broth is simmered slowly, and the same unhurried approach is taken with the meat dishes. The roasts tempt with their rich juices, practically calling out for a piece of bread, while the veal shank begs to be accompanied by sautéed potatoes and a generous bowl of salad. Fried chicken is a classic: crispy, juicy, and prepared in such a way that after the very first bite, it becomes clear why it is an essential part of every visit. Be sure not to miss the house chocolate cassata or the strudel with its crisp, lightly buttery crust that gently flakes under the fork, revealing a soft, rich filling shaped by the season. Homely, yet so indulgent that it remains in the memory. And yet, Zgornji Kirn does not live on memories alone, nor is it trapped in tradition. They know exactly what must remain untouched and what can be taken a step further. That is why this inn is not a museum piece from times gone by, but a living house with character.
