Gault&Millau's review 2026

Gostilna Pod smrekco is filled with the aromas of dishes familiar from Slovenian home kitchens: beef soup, mushroom soup, matevž, blood sausages, pečenice, homemade cottage cheese štruklji, and apple strudel. Seasonal ingredients also shape the menu, bringing pumpkin or asparagus soup to the table depending on the time of year and what nearby farms have to offer. Although the inn stands beside the Krka River, its culinary heart often belongs to the sea. Guests are frequently surprised by the quality of the Adriatic seafood on offer. The menu features scorpionfish, John Dory, sea bass, turbot, sea bream, octopus prepared under a baking bell or grilled, squid, scampi, and more. The kitchen treats these premium ingredients with restraint and respect, focusing on precision and allowing the natural flavours to remain clear and recognisable. Meat lovers are equally well looked after. Options include rump steak, beef fillet, ribeye, Wiener schnitzel, grilled steak, steak with wild mushrooms, and the house specialty steak. Pasta dishes such as carbonara and other familiar classics round out the menu. Desserts continue the theme of comforting familiarity. Guests can choose between grandmother’s apple strudel, gibanica, panna cotta, tiramisu, or pancakes filled with walnuts, Nutella, jam, or chocolate. At Pod smrekco, there is no pursuit of culinary spectacle for its own sake. Instead, the restaurant relies on what matters most: honest home-style flavours, the freshness of the sea, and dishes that impress through quality rather than showmanship.
