Gault&Millau's review 2026

In a narrow street of historic Šmartno, where tables spill out among the stone walls and shade of old houses during the warmer months, Hiša Marica offers an ideal setting for a culinary escape. Beautifully restored, the house welcomes guests with warmth and the hospitality for which the Brda region is known. The beef tartare becomes an interactive ritual, with guests taking on the role of chef. Premium beef and a selection of separate ingredients are served on a rustic wooden board, allowing everyone to season and prepare the tartare to their own taste. When local tradition meets the patience of Brda grandmothers, the result is food that speaks through flavour and memory. This philosophy is reflected in fregola with veal ragù, combining tender veal, garden vegetables, and hours of slow cooking, as well as in the traditional Brda toč served with homemade sausage and grilled polenta. The Black Angus beef tagliata is a tribute to quality meat: precisely cooked, juicy, and full of flavour. Shavings of aged Parmesan add depth, while roasted potatoes prepared according to grandmother Marica’s recipe bring a touch of nostalgia. Paired with a glass of carefully selected wine from the family cellar, the experience comes to a close with good food, genuine hospitality and a sense that local tradition is still very much alive.
