Gault&Millau's review 2026

In Zgornja Bela near Preddvor stands an inn with more than two centuries of tradition behind it - yet it does not live off the past alone. Its strength lies in presenting homemade flavours without unnecessary spectacle: honest, seasonal, and deeply connected to the place it calls home. The kitchen remains firmly rooted in its local surroundings. On the plates, local ingredients, tradition, and more contemporary techniques come together, though never at the expense of the inn’s authentic character. The selection is generous. Among the cold starters are goose carpaccio with pomegranate and black radish, as well as beef carpaccio made from locally sourced meat. Soups, naturally, are an essential part of such a traditional inn, whether it is beef broth with noodles and liver dumplings or the seasonal soup of the day. The warm dishes continue in the same spirit. Buckwheat gnocchi with porcini mushrooms, homemade noodles with zucchini and porcini, veal sweetbreads, pumpkin blossom with basil, rice, and zucchini. Among the main courses, standout dishes include slowly braised veal cheeks with cottage cheese štrukelj, venison goulash with bread dumpling, the signature Bizjak skewer, and veal shank, which must be ordered in advance. The dessert selection remains equally faithful to their story: homemade cake, dark chocolate mousse, vanilla panna cotta, and the indispensable anise twists served with ice cream.
