L'avis de Gault&Millau

Mateja Bagar and Aleš Šibav have been successfully writing a fairy tale that takes place behind the walls of a romantic Renaissance castle called Kromberk. Aleš's culinary masterpieces depend on his daily inspiration, but they are always made from fresh ingredients of the highest quality, as well as with respect to tradition. In the wonderful castle ambiance, along with kind service, you can enjoy either the meat or fish tasting menu, both are available as a six, eight, or ten course experience (the prices range from 60 to 103 euros). You can also choose other dishes and each one of them will be kindly presented to you by Aleš (we spent 33 euros for three plates). The menu here is more of a guideline than something set in stone. They namely serve whatever they have in stock that day: daily fresh fish, amberjack carpaccio, angler, wild salmon fillet that is smoked in a glass and served on thin fennel slices, buzara-style mussels, pasta with bottarga, beef ribs from Poland, slowly cooked guineafowl breast, a thin layer of grilled pork belly with a very intensive taste … You cannot go wrong if you let them choose both the food as well as the accompanying wines. The veal carpaccio with olive oil and black salt was a wonderful introduction into the whole experience. The tender sea bass fillet was served with fluffy mashed potatoes with braised zucchini, and for the decent sweet finale we had white chocolate mousse with red pepper, roasted pistachios, and chocolate topping. It comes as no surprise that Restaurant Grad Kromberk is a popular wedding and party venue, also due to its carefully arranged garden.
