In a narrow alley, not far from the boardwalk by the sea, you cannot help but notice the refined facade of Stara gostilna, which stands out among the old houses, typical for Piran. Stara gostilna was decorated with elegance, glamour, and comfort in mind. All of this is reflected in the plates that are put together masterfully, as well as in the combination of local ingredients and use of cosmopolitan techniques. You will be blown away by the imaginative seafood such as the wonderful tuna sashimi with sea hare caviar and wasabi, crispy shrimp tempura with homemade smoked mayonnaise, smoked octopus with sun-dried tomatoes and mascarpone cream … Meat eaters will be delighted by their aged steaks. Together with some warm herb-infused oil and imaginative sides, it is a dish to be remembered. The decision of how to choose the sweet finale is yours – will it be a chocolate bite or a plate of majestic grilled shrimp? After you have a look at the wine list, you will be escorted into the wine cellar by the well-educated sommeliers. In the cellar, you will find prestigious labels of world-renowned winemakers, as well as the most important representatives of the Slovene wine-making elite. Cigar lovers will start to purr with pleasure at the sight of their exquisite collection. The pleasure of combining exquisite culinary and wine is guaranteed, but the receipt will not be kind to your wallet. The final impression of the cosmopolitan experience, however, will convince the taste buds to return at another special occasion. Even more so because the kitchen got a new chef, and we cannot wait to see what this fresh new wind will bring into the old Stara gostilna.
Istrian cuisine and cuisine from Primorska intertwine with Venetian culinary in this lovely family restaurant at the entrance of Piran. The atmosphere is truly special and it is no wonder that people from Slovenia and abroad love to come back every single time they visit the Slovenian coast. Leave you car in the Fornače garage house and after a few minutes’ walk, you will be able to enjoy an authentic experience. Do book a table in advance, otherwise it is very likely that you will stay without your divine seafood tasting. Start with marinated sardines, cold fish starters or their famous Piran fish soup. The filled cuttlefish will leave you speechless. The menu is orchestrated by the daily catch of fishermen and mussel growers who always bring the freshest fruits. The chef married tuna with rucola and sea bass with porcini mushrooms. Otherwise, seafood is the best grilled or prepared in a delicious buttery sauce. They also make excellent pasta and risottos. The owners are incredibly welcoming, which makes your stay even more pleasant and the food even more delicious. A classic at its absolute best!
