Hotel Planinka

Gault&Millau's review

After a panoramic drive through Savinja Valley, you would expect a country inn where they serve plates with meat products and a glass of cold beer. Hotel Planinka restaurant is something very different, though – it is much more city-like and sophisticated both according to their ambiance as well as their menu. They only offer menus to their guests and they have several different ones: daily lunch menus, where you get three dishes for only 18 euros, more sophisticated Planinka menus for 29 euros (also for three plates) and the tasting menu with four, five or six dishes ranging from 41 to 57 euros. Booking a table is obligatory, so you will probably choose your menu before even coming there. The great thing is that every guest at the table can choose their own menu, so we obviously had to try all three of them. The trout fillet was served cold and it was amazingly tasty. Its flavours were highlighted by carrot cream and a gentle parsley root purée, which was seasoned with just the right amount of star anise to give it an Asian twist. Among the main dishes, fish was the star. They served an otherwise rare guest of Slovenian restaurants – zander. They made it in an orange capuccino with parsnip purée and with noodles in tarragon sauce, served with garden vegetables. In both plates, zander defended its reputation of freshwater king and the chefs of Planinka have presented the perfect way to make it so that the meat stays juicy and rich. They have brought us several interesting Slovenian wines from their wine cellar (which you can see and on some solemn occasions even drink a glass of wine there), but they also have an impressive list of foreign wines. What we especially loved was that they serve all of their wines by the glass.
