Domačija Kabaj Morel

Gault&Millau's review

When you park your car in the courtyard of this homestead, surrounded by vineyards, you will feel like home. This is also how they welcome you – as a true friend. The internationally famous excellent wines of Jean Michel Morel, which he makes in qvevri, amphorae from Georgia, are always there for you to taste together with wonderful seasonal dishes from Brda. They say that their cuisine looks simple at first sight, but because of the mild climate and location of Goriška brda, it is actually a combination of different traditions: Slovenian, Friulian and Habsburg. A delicious veggie lasagna with zucchini and aubergines, covered with a sauce made from homegrown tomatoes, mozzarella buffala and a splash of Kabaj olive oil with basil, excites even the most passionate meat eaters with its harmony of flavours. The main course consisted of slowly cooked pork cheeks with a cream of homemade prosciutto. The taste was balanced with gentle, soft pea cream and steamed carrots. For the sweet finale, we jumped into the kitchens of local grandmothers: potato dumplings filled with plums, covered with plum sauce and buttery breadcrumbs. We paid 35 euros for five courses.

Restavracija Gredič

Ceglo 9, 5212 Dobrovo v Brdih

You will spot the romantic castle in the middle of the vineyards from afar. The building is quite magnificent and there are many reasons for visiting. The castle is a hotel, a restaurant, and impressive wine cellar all in one. Even on the outside, the building gives the impression that you will feel like royalty here. This is why Gredič is a popular venue for special events like weddings. The interior is a nice surprise though, with modern decor and art. Making you feel good and comfortable is a priority here. The romantic castle setting and breath-taking views let you know that the pampering in the elegant restaurant with floor-length tablecloths will be perfect for times when you want something a bit different from the traditional Brda cuisine. You will hear the ocean in Gredič's plates, taste its freshness and minerality. On the fish menu, you will also find trout. They combine rice with prawns, serve angler with white polenta, and scallops with tomato marmalade. If you wish to rather take a stroll on land, you will enjoy the delicious tartar with shallots, or pork tenderloin with herb crust. Embrace the wine pairings, for their cellar is well stocked. For wine lovers, we suggest making a reservation for the wine tasting. The experience in such a grand place will be something very special. There is a special spot for sparkling wines that even have their own temple in the Gradič wine cellar.

Restavracija Bužinel

Plešivo 37a, 5212 Dobrovo v Brdih

A sea-inspired story in the heart of Goriška brda vineyards! At Bužinel, you can hear the sea waves coming from the plates, be it a gentle splash or a passionate roar. Regulars here don't read the menu, they know the daily offer depends on the catch or the fisherman's luck. The plate of raw sea delicacies is unforgettable, the ingredients are first class and fresh. The minerally-sweet taste is elevated with wonderful olive oil that excites even the greatest foodies. What they offer is sometimes quite impressive and it is hard to choose the appetiser. After the whole table agrees to come here again, it is slightly easier to decide which dish to give up that day. One thing is for sure though: we will not skip the buzara-style shellfish! It is their most renowned dish and you will sing praises to it for days to come, without a doubt. Pasta, especially with crab, risotto, fish, both grilled and oven-baked, scampi … whatever you choose, you will not regret it. The heart of the restaurant are Katja and Elvis Bužinel, together with their sons. Because the love for winemaking is passed from generation to generation, it is not to be feared for the future of this family-run restaurant. When you relax by the pool after your meal, with a glass of wine in hand, admiring the hills covered in vineyards, you will look forward to the next beautiful and tasty experience at Bužinel.

Ošterija Klinec

Medana 20, 5212 Dobrovo v Brdih

Ošterija Klinec is located by the village church in the centre of probably the most well-known wine region in Slovenia. They want their guests to know that the best things are simple, and you must take time for them. They swear by homemade, homegrown, and local. Fresh ingredients are skilfully processed so they retain all the flavours of the Brda sun and soil. Then they spice the offer up with a heartfelt welcome and ecologically produced wines from their own cellar. A large sandy front yard, a garden with wooden tables, folding chairs and white parasols, a huge terrace in two levels overlooking the vineyards – time flows differently with a view like this. The interior is also charming, with a bar and selection of house spirits at the entrance, two rooms with old tables and walls full of paintings; they even preserved the open fireplace. Aleks Klinec is the head of the family eco-farm, working in the vineyard, wine-cellar and kitchen, while his wife Simona is irreplaceable in greeting and serving the guests. They offer few but exquisite dishes. You can decide for a three, five or nine course tasting menu. We paid 35 euros for the three course one. Homemade products from the Krškopolje pig are mouth-watering, the bread is light, with a crispy crust. The appetisers are from the Brda area and seasonal, just like the main courses, which are wonderfully backed by local wines. Barley is prepared with zucchini, roasted duck breast with figs and onions, cooked cream with caramel sauce.
