Located on the highest spot of Vrhovec, Tač, named after its owner is run by the couple Vesna and Tihomir (Tač) Miletić. Both have brought their knowledge, experience, heart and soul into this restaurant, and that is evident in every detail, its design, ambience and dishes. Tač has its own regular customers, but for those who visit it for the first time, it feels like a cosy country house, a real home with family pictures and all kind of souvenirs. The owners will welcome you warmly and while Tač is usually in the dining area recommending wines to his guests, chef Vesna is in charge of the kitchen. Due to a recent shortage of professional cooks, Vesna prepares all the dishes herself, which in fact proved to be a huge advantage for the guests. Everything coming from her kitchen is truly of the highest quality. The ingredients are exclusively seasonal; the best cuts of meat (lamb, Boškarin ox, sometimes even donkey) as well as fish, are purchased from the local producers. A great deal of greens comes from their own garden, while the rest is also bought only from local producers. Although mostly inspired by the Istrian style of cuisine, Vesna likes to make other traditional dishes too. Order the excellent Boškarin pljeskavica (a sort of beef grilled burger) and as a side, she will serve you her homemade ajvar (red bell pepper and eggplant mixture) or goose liver pâté. It’s best to follow the recommendations. While we were waiting, we enjoyed some homemade bread and extra virgin high-quality olive oils. For appetizers we had boiled ham and excellent salami, soft and delicately seasoned, unlike most dry cured meats, in which garlic tends to dominate. We ordered creamy but light, topinambour soup. Young roast lamb, which melted in the mouth, was crispy on the outside, while the red scorpion fish, grilled on the fire made from vine branches, was the best we’d ever had. If you love porcini mushrooms, you must definitely visit when they are in season and order them raw and thinly sliced, or grilled. There is, of course, the porcini frittata too. The desserts are also seasonal, mostly prepared with fruits like strawberries in spring, or chestnuts in autumn, however, the freshly made apple strudel or pie is always available. Being a great wine connoisseur, Tač is credited with the great selection of the best Croatian wines, as well as some from Slovenia, Italy and Austria. Make sure to invite to Tač your business partners or guests from abroad, if you want to show them what great food is all about. Tač is an ideal place for a Sunday family lunch as well.
