When in Buščina, take some time to visit the tavern of the same name. Its small, pleasant terrace, friendly staff and the impeccably prepared and creative dishes make it stand out from the masses of other Istrian hot spots. We were off to a successful start with the cold seafood appetisers, which consisted of sardines served with sweet marinated onion, raw shrimp, octopus salad and cod. This was followed by fuži, a type of authentic Istrian pasta, with wild asparagus and canestrelli – Istria can be so delicious! The Boškarin (a cattle breed native to this region) tagliata, served with a bit of fried polenta, fleur de sel and exquisite olive oil, was a very pleasant surprise. It would have been useful to know that the red powder served on the plate with moist chocolate cake was in fact very hot chilli powder; however, the homemade yogurt with olives and ice cream proved to be quite effective in extinguishing the chilli-induced fires.
